Sunday has become my new favorite day because it means that we get a new episode of The Last of Us. This week’s episode was pretty good but definitely not one of the best.
As a disclaimer, there will be spoilers in this review so please read with caution if you have yet to see this episode.
This episode was pretty slow; I’m not going to lie. We dove further into the background of Ellie and how she was bitten. The audience is introduced to Riley, who we learn is Ellie’s best friend before the accident.
For me, I loved this scene in the game because you see Ellie evolve further as a character and see the tragedies she has been through. I thought they captured the relationship of Riley and Ellie very well. Granted, I don’t remember the romantic part of their relationship but that could just be me.
What I really liked about this episode was how they showed the infected wake up earlier in the episode. It caused this tension the rest of the time where I was waiting to see when he was going to attack.
More than anything, I love what this episode did for Ellie’s character. We finally got to see what caused her to be more rough around the edges and have a tough time with people abandoning her. It was awful to see her and Riley just have to sit together knowing both of them are about to die. And, it makes it even worse knowing that Ellie has to watch her become a monster and most likely have to kill her.
My only complaint is that they could have made the flashback a bit shorter. There were times where it felt dragged out. It was the first time in the whole series where I felt the length of the episode was too long.
Other than that, I still can’t get over what this show has become. It has been better than my wildest dreams, bringing my favorite video game to life and then some. Just remember, there are only two episodes left, so catch up while you can and tune in next week on HBO Max.
