The Banshees of Inisherin Review

I finally sat down to watch one of the favorites to win Best Picture, The Banshees of Inisherin. This synopsis of the movie comes straight from Google:

“On a remote island off the coast of Ireland, Pádraic is devastated when his buddy Colm suddenly puts an end to their lifelong friendship. With help from his sister and a troubled young islander, Pádraic sets out to repair the damaged relationship by any means necessary. However, as Colm’s resolve only strengthens, he soon delivers an ultimatum that leads to shocking consequences.”

I will do my best to not spoil the movie in this review, but I do advise you to be careful just in case a couple of minor spoilers are mixed in.

To start this off, this was one of the best movies that I have seen from 2022. The story was amazing and actually very relatable. You can understand the views of the two characters. But, this movie does an even better job of changing tones. The movie starts off very light-hearted and fun but quickly turns dark in the blink of an eye.

This of course has to do with the unbelievable job of the main cast. These actors put on some of my favorite performances of the year. While they are all great, but the star of the show was Colin Farrell.

His performance as Pádraic makes you feel every emotion, which is impressive given how simple Pádraic is;. Farrell’s character is this kind, nice, uncomplicated man who loves his life as a farmer with his best friend, Colm, and his sister.

I know that Kerry Condon and Brendan Gleeson were fantastic in their roles but I do want to shine a light on Barry Keoghan. I have talked about this performance in my Oscar article but I really thought his performance was that captivating.

It can be hard to see it because his character is dumb and crude, but the delivery of all his lines added so much to the heart and soul of the movie. In my opinion, one of the best scenes was when Keoghan’s character asks Condon’s character to marry him by the lake. There was not much to the scene at face value, but I thought it spoke volumes about the tone of the film and Keoghan’s incredible performance.

This movie deserved every nomination it has received and more. I truly believe this has a strong shot to win Best Picture, and Colin Farrell should win Best Actor unless they decide to give it to fucking Austin Butler. The only person allowed to beat Farrell here is Brendan Fraser and that should be obvious.

Anyways, check this movie out on HBO Max as soon as you possibly can.
